Dear ${customer.firstName}

Welcome to September Coaching in Education News! This month we feature a terrific article I came across on Twitter. Since so many people were retweeting it I approached the author, David Weston from the Teacher Development Trust in the UK, to see if we might reproduce it here. So thanks to David for allowing us to include it in Coaching in Education News.

In addition, you will find lots of news items. For those in Sydney area, we are reviving our complimentary after school Twilight Workshops and featuring two outstanding international presenters – Margaret Barr, GCI Lead Associate in Scotland, and Dr Mark McKergow, one of the world's leading thinkers and practitioners in Solution Focused approaches.

And we include another resource review - Books that Changed My (Coaching) Life. In this segment GCI coaches and facilitators share about a book that significantly influenced their coaching practice.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Coaching in Education News.

All good wishes,
John Campbell
Executive Director

7 powerful questions for leaders: creating a culture of ideas

- by David Weston

Communication is the life-blood of an organisation. Dialogue needs to be honest: seeking objectivity, reducing bias and never covering up truths or views to make things ‘comfortable’. However, a habit of bad conversation stifles problem-solving, dampens enthusiasm and encourages the building of defensive routines.

From my own organization and having worked with many schools, training providers and charities, it’s clear that the good communication begins with the leaders.

What We Are Reading?

We continue our focus on highlighting some of the best coaching resources that have emerged and stood the test of time, over the last 15 years or so. It can sometimes be easy for us to be seduced by the new and the shiny, sometimes relegating the older resources to the back shelf.

So we decided to invite those from the GCI team that have been around coaching for some time to share their recommendations regarding coaching resources that have influenced their practice and have endured over time.

This month Dr Kris Needham shares her thoughts about Blended Coaching: Skills and Strategies to Support Principal Development - written by Gary Bloom, Claire Castagna, Ellen Moir and Betsy Warren and published by Corwin Press in 2005.
