To some in the coaching world, the inclusion of ‘sharing knowledge and perspective’ as a skill may seem at odds with the philosophy of ‘pure’ (entirely facilitative) coaching. However, in the context of being an effective [conversation] leader, instructional coach or mentor in an education context, knowing when and how to offer some of your own knowledge or perspective to help your conversation partner make progress, and being able to do this clearly and sensitively, can be considered a key skill.
Experienced instructional coaches and mentors know that possessing knowledge, expertise and experience is not sufficient – they also need to be effective explainers and modelers and appreciate the fact that simply telling and showing do not generally effect sustained change.
A key part of developing this skill is recognising our tendency to overplay advice-giving and learning to manage it.
